Mercedes Maybach S580 review: It's like the upper deck suite of a luxury yacht

Mercedes Maybach S580 review: It’s powerful where it has to be, without overcooking anything. The S580 is on top of the luxury food chart

Mercedes-Maybach keeps dropping outstanding luxury saloons and each rendition promises to bring with it more comfort and technology. The S-Class Maybach S580 is no exception to the rule. In its completeness, it continues raising the bar for luxury cars that even dare to compete in this segment.

The exterior facade may not seem a world apart, but the subtle enhancements and refined lines give it the recognisable Mercedes-Maybach DNA. At the front, the large grille with thin vertical slats wears the Maybach branding as a crown. In fact, the Maybach logo finds itself on the C-pillar, the boot lid, and even on the wheels.

The same follows inside the car as if you’d ever forget what you’re riding. The 19-inch alloy wheel plates look like plates of silver that aren’t too flashy and so intimidatingly minimalist that it reflects your highest standards. It is a stretch of the S-Class, quite literally, because the S580 is 180mm longer than the longest S-Class available in India. The chrome bezels around the grille, windows, and rear highlights are distinctly Maybach.

The feature lines have been reduced because the car doesn’t need to try too hard to prove its point. Also adorning the front are the Digital Light technology-enabled headlamps. It comprises three powerful LEDs in each headlamp, which direct light with the help of 1.3 million micro-mirrors. These lights put on a little light show for the driver when they’re about to board the car spaceship of a cabin.

Coming to the cabin, the Mercedes-Maybach S580 is nothing short of a top-deck suite in a megayacht. The rear seats are massive recliners with unbelievable legroom. In fact, you can completely flatten the seat to take a nap, have the ambient lighting to set the mood, and switch on soothing tunes on the 30-speaker Burmester 4D Surround  Sound system.

If you’re as indulgent as you are expected to be, you could add on the Maybach champagne flutes and enjoy a drink just before you decide to settle for some shut-eye. The footrest of the seats will massage the worries of the day away, while the incredibly silent cabin will make you forget that you’re on a busy city road.

If you do not want to waste a single waking moment with sleep, you could indulge in the MBUX rear-seat entertainment system that offers 11.6-inch displays with all entertainment apps available. The S580 offers energising COMFORT packages that set the mood and please the senses for a feeling of well-being and refreshment. Rear occupants even enjoy the autonomy of controlling their comfort features with the help of a central tablet.

Moving to the front, the dash of the Mercedes-Maybach S580 is a sight to behold. Highlighted with ambient lighting strips, it houses a massive 12.9-inch OLED central display. The screen accepts voice controls, biometric authentication, and even a pin, depending on what is convenient for you to access while you’re driving. It acts as the nerve centre for the car. You can control the AC, access personalised profiles, and choose your driver and passenger convenience features from here.

Everything feels and looks premium, from the surfaces to the doors and even the diamond-trim seats in Nappa Leather. Behind the sturdy steering wheel sits the 3D, digital instrument console. The driver’s console is unbelievably useful as it maps 3D diagrams of cars, trucks, buses, and even motorcycles that are ahead of your vehicle, giving you warnings and guiding you to a safe drive. Likewise, you get highly visualised parking assistance and one of the best HUDs in the automotive industry, with windscreen projections that make you feel like you’re in a simulation.

The Mercedes-Maybach S580 is powered by a 4.0-litre V8 engine, with an acceleration of 0-100kmph in just 5 seconds. It’s powerful where it has to be, without overcooking anything. It’s the car you aspire to have and is on the top of the luxury food chart. This time, like several times before, Mercedes has truly outdone itself.
