In hindsight it is hard to imagine a situation where you would look at an S-Class and say that it is not luxurious or expensive enough. In the rarified world of luxury, however, the more exclusive it is, the better. The S-Class, we would say, is a bit common in the wealthy epicentres of the world and you would really not want to park your S-Class along the many others of the same ilk at the golf club. For that, Mercedes has the S-Class Maybach, a sub-brand spin off to cater to those who want more and are not shy about paying for it.
The Maybach S650 is the flagship version and knocks at the door of the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Bentley Mulsanne. Rather loudly, too. For starters, in terms of the traditional barometers in this segment, the Maybach S650 comes out trumps. It is, quite possibly, the quietest automobile on earth with its V12 going about its duties without a whisper. It is only when you touch a few buttons that the handcrafted gem of an engine makes a dignified roar. In this spec it makes more power than a supercar which means you are whisked to ludicrous speeds in a blink of an eye.
The way it masks its sheer length and mass is pure disbelief and you can enjoy driving this thing and revel in this magical V12 as one of the finest automotive experiences. What’s uncanny though is the NASA levels of tech deployed here: a camera that scans the road surface ahead of you to adjust the suspension, a plethora of gadgets and even a night vision camera! More than this engineering witchcraft, the Maybach S650 is best sampled from the back seat.
It is even bigger here than a standard S-Class and shames a private jet for sheer indulgence and luxury. You can stretch out at the back amidst the finest materials known to mankind. Metal, wood, chrome, leather—they’re all there. But you also have every conceivable gadget so that you can watch a movie while reclining on the soft cushioned headrest with a glass of bubbly and get a massage. However, that is not all as the insane fetishes lavished on this car are unreal and I would run out of space describing it all. A 26-speaker audio system is literally music to the ears and there’s fragrance piped into the cabin. The ultimate tell-your-mates-at-the-club bit is that the car also senses your mood and adjusts the music, massage and other functions. Very Bond-esque.
Mercedes has kept it elegant and simple on the outside with only the superb matte paint along with those alloys and the extra length dictating its hierarchy as the top of the Mercedes family tree. The Maybach S650 does not shout from the rooftops; it makes an impression making it hard to ignore without trying too hard. If there is a finer representation of the term luxury car, I am yet to see it.
