Hugo Boss Reversed
It’s one of the most instantly recognised fragrance flacons. Cut back to 1995, a time when mostly intense work scents dominated fragrance counters. Gentlemen still clung to musks and woods. That was the time Hugo by Hugo Boss with its military canteen bottle style flacon came as a whiff of fresh air. Envisioned as an aromatic green fragrance by American perfumer Bob Aliano, it went on to become one of the best-selling men’s perfumes of all time. Hugo Boss has reinvented this scent many times over, but it’s the latest avatar that is probably the finest reinterpretation of this evergreen classic.
It starts with the bottle. The iconic transparent flask gets a fresh coat of milky white paint. It’s part of Hugo Boss’ vision to flip routine on its head. The juice gets a complete makeover too. It’s clean, uncomplicated and begins with the zesty presence of Calabrian bergamot and grapefruit. At its heart is rosemary and it finishes with Haitian vetiver.
This is a completely new scent from the 1990s original, but retains the same effervescent appeal. Just like the original, it’s easy to wear; perfect for people pleasers. This is not a scent filled with mystique but an uncomplicated one that your co-workers will approve of. While it’s perfect for a humid day in the office, it also works for a weekend outing to the mall or a beach party. Hugo Boss Reversed boasts of a good sillage and above average longevity. Above all, this is a scent that can calm your nerves on a manic Monday with its mild vibe.
Versace Eros Flame
There’s a fascinating legend around the Versace logo — the head of Medusa. Gianni Versace is believed to have chosen Medusa, a Greek mythological figure, because she made people fall in love with her and they had no way back. He hoped it would be the same case with the Versace brand and its scents.
Eros Flame is a flanker to the brand’s masculine Eros scent that debuted in 2012. It’s billed as a scent of contrasts where high-quality ingredients enrich and enhance each other.
Versace opts for a fiery red flacon. Not surprisingly the brand’s Medusa motif dominates the packaging. There’s a jewel-like Medusa seal on the golden bottle cap and a large Medusa crest at the centre of the bright red bottle.
This is a bottle that is deigned to make heads turn. The fragrance opens on a vivacious note with juicy Italian fruits like lemon, tangerine and bitter orange warmed with black pepper. The aromatic heart features geranium and rose with an intense base that includes notes like Texas Cedar, Sandalwood and Haitian Vetiver.
Eros Flame is certainly not a subtle scent. Get ready for those strong love or loathe reactions at work. Staying power is average while sillage is quite good. This scent works equally well for the boardroom and an all-nighter at your favourite night club with its heady mix of notes.
Riflesso by Trussardi
Veronique Nyberg, the nose behind Paco Rabanne’s best-seller Invictus, has crafted this woody, oriental scent. Made for the modern gentleman brimming with self-confidence, this one opens with bergamot, pink grapefruit and green apple. The floral heart includes geranium and lavender while the base notes include leather and tonka bean.
Diesel Only the Brave High
The clenched fist-shaped bottle is back. Diesel follows up on Only the Brave and Only the Brave Extreme with a fresher variation of the original fragrance. It’s the perfect everyday work fragrance with fresh notes like yuzu, peppermint and grapefruit.
Acqua di Neroli Ermenegildo Zegna for men
If refreshing, citrusy scents give you that extra zing at work, you will dig Zegna’s fine new scent. Acqua di Neroli is built on bergamot oil from Zegna’s farm in Calabria, the toe of Italy’s toe-shaped peninsula. The zesty bergamot is complemented by lemon and orange blossom.
Bvlgari Man Black Orient Bvlgari for Men
This is a scent with a strong rum note. What more can you ask for on a dreary Monday morning at work to transport you to another place. Positioned as a lush oriental, this scent developed by master perfumer Albert Morillas is sophisticated and mysterious with notes like leather and cardamom in the mix.
