Time under the hammer: Watch this space for the Christie's auctions in Geneva and Hong Kong this month

Christie's auctions will offer both rare and important watches.

This month, Christie's will be holding two major watch auctions; the Rare Watches auction at the Four Seasons des Bergues in Geneva, and the Important Watches Sale in Hong Kong. While the former will be offering 254 watches from the early 19th century, the latter will showcase a range of contemporary timepieces from circa 2017.

One of the major highlights of the Rare Watches auction that is scheduled to be held in Geneva is the exceptional pink gold Rolex reference 6062 “Stelline” triple calendar with moon phase featuring the legendary and widely celebrated star dial. What makes this watch so special is the exclusivity - limited to a production number of 50 pieces, the reference 6062 was first introduced at the Basel Fair in 1950. Another important highlight of the Geneva auction is the personal pocket watch of Patek Philippe’s co-founder Jean-Adrien Philippe (1815-1894). Consigned by his descendants, the pocket watch features the co-founder's famous design for the two-train independent centre seconds movement. It is also one of the first ever pocket watches to be made according to Swiss patent no. 1017, dated May 1889. Other focus pieces include the Rolex reference 3525 in steel and gold chronograph that was once owned by Pop Art legend Andy Warhol and the Patek Philippe Reference 2499 line-up that was the brand's benchmark grand complication that lasted 35 years.

The Important Watches Sale in Hong Kong also offers an array of unique watches. From the 18k pink gold limited edition Jacob & Co. Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon to the Patek Philippe Reference 5204 featuring a platinum perpetual calendar split seconds chronograph and the contemporary Richard Mille NTPT limited edition, it offers something for everyone. With estimates ranging from CHF2,000 (Rs 1.37 lakh) to CHF1,000,000 (Rs 6.84 crore), the Rare Watches auction at the Four Seasons des Bergues in Geneva and the Important Watches Sale in Hong Kong will be held on the 13th and 27th of May,  respectively.

Small Pleasures from NOMOS Glashütte

For Baselworld 2019, the German watch brand NOMOS Glashütte launched the Duo collection, a brand new range of entry-level timepieces that are smaller versions of the brand's classic timepieces from the Tangente and Orion to the Ludwig and Tetra. Simple and elegant, the new collection features the finest Glashütte calibres working within and is available in a dial size of 33mm with the Tetra available in a 27mm case size. The classic models are further reinterpreted with only two beautiful gold hand watches and a missing sub-seconds dial that gives it a clean, simple and delicately elegant aesthetic. The silver galvanic dial colour set in contrast with the mocha-brown indexes further adds to the warmth of the collection that works perfectly with the well-designed beige straps. All four models of the Duo collection come with a solid steel case back that offers enough open space for free engraving as they had earlier done for their Club Campus models. They are powered by the in-house Alpha.2 movement, which is a hand-wound calibre with a 43-hour power reserve.

With a natural talent to balance an aesthetic that is at once very design forward and modern with deep traditional watchmaking sensibilities, the Duo collection from NOMOS Glashütte reminds the audience why they love the brand so much. The four new models of the 2019 Duo collection are priced aggressively:

Ludwig at Rs 96,114 approx

Tangente at Rs 1 lakh approx

Orion and Tetra at Rs 1.11 lakh approx
