ICC World Cup 2019: Maverick batsman, Shikhar Dhawan, on the cover of THE MAN

Shikhar Dhawan laid low by an injury.

Shikhar Dhawan Shikhar Dhawan

With all the preparedness in the world, this Gabbar has to sit it out for three weeks due to a thumb injury. He scored a whopping 117 against Australia in the WC 2019, a huge factor that took the score to win us the match at a comfortable 352/5.

Shikhar Dhawan was the tournament top run-scorer in the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy events, as well India's highest run-scorer in the 2015 World Cup. He scored a match-winning knock of 97 (not out) against Kolkata Knight Riders in the recent IPL. Shikhar Dhawan, Shikhar Dhawan, India's hopes were pinned on him to open the matches in this WC 2019, which is why we put this champion on the cover of THE MAN this month.

Shikhar Dhawan is that rare person who has his feet planted firmly on the ground despite wealth and international fame. Dhawan appears totally chilled out and without a care in the world as we found out during the shoot for the cover of THE MAN. He's deceptively mild as he follows photographer Subi Samuel's instructions about poses and angles.

He's munching on nuts as he ambles in with a formal hello. It's awkward to start but getting in a cricket question right at the beginning should do the trick and get him rolling. And so it's the most insane – are you ready for the World Cup? He should ideally come back with a sharp retort – of course, he's ready, he has to be, it's the World Cup, moron, and he is a crucial opener – but he shrugs and smiles. “Yes, of course!”

“Nervous? Stressed?”

“I don't think about it. If I think about stress, I will attract it, so why attract it. It's about positive energy and focus.”

This is all very Sufi, Buddhist, Zen, or whatever you might call it. But he's like that. Even at the end of the day after endless takes and somewhere he's not getting the dialogue right, he's still upbeat and his energy levels remain high.

Other words he uses a lot are focus and energy, almost like a mantra, almost as if that's what he wants to attract from the universe. What he values most in the world is happiness. “I am a happy-go-lucky person but I work at happiness, just as you would on any skill.”
