Romance wafts in with the ocean breeze, amplified by azure waters and jewelled-toned sunsets. If there is love to be discovered, it is here, marooned by choice on a private island in The Maldives.

It is no coincidence that ‘lobi’ means love and ‘gili’ means island, in the local dialect of Dhivehi. At the OBLU SELECT Lobigili — our island of choice in the North Malé Atoll — romance is a more than a recurring theme. It is the premise on which this blissful retreat is built.

A frothy white wake is the only evidence of the pace at which we reach the resort via speedboat from Malé’s Velana International Airport. Within 20 minutes, we are greeted by a jetty full of smiling island hostesses. Expect champagne or another equally intoxicating welcome drink on arrival and none of the usual rigmarole of a busy reception counter where time ticks away doing tedious check-in paperwork. The formalities are handled seamlessly in-room, while you take in the sights and sounds of your stunning private villa. Whether you choose a beach pool villa or an over-water abode, all 68-villas are designed for double occupancy only. The SunNest Water Villa — with its private infinity pool and overwater deck — is the ultimate indulgence, but the other villa categories are generous and charming in their own right.

Bounty and beauty abound here, evident in every experience. At Ylang Ylang, the all-day dining restaurant, breakfast is an exhaustive feast featuring everything from sushi and scrambled eggs to dosas and doughnuts. Enjoy your evening at the bar, as the sun sets in spectacular fashion and eat dinner under the stars: several cuisines are on offer to ensure you are spoilt for choice; each course a carefully plated treat for your tastebuds. Most memorable perhaps is the Lobigili version of breakfast in bed — reinvented as a heart-shaped tray that floats delightfully laden with delicacies in your private pool.

Then there is food for the soul: to be found underwater (as you snorkel past colourful coral and a dazzling array of darting fish) and at the resort’s unmissable Elena Spa. Sustainability is a key theme at the spa, which has thatched roofs and no air-conditioning. While we tried a signature Lobi Dhooni treatment (bliss by coconut shell), it began to drizzle, and though the partial roof kept the rain away from the massage tables, a slight spray carried on the breeze, adding yet another dimension to an already indulgent sensory experience! Despite the call of water sports and the sapphire sea, it was the spa that we gravitated towards for two days in a row — following up our coconut shell massage with a Dhekanbalun ritual using hot and cold stone therapy and culminating in a calming, fragrant outdoor bath.

It is not unusual for resorts in The Maldives to offer all-inclusive plans and, in this regard, OBLU SELECT Lobigili is no different, but their generosity is notable. The Lobi Plan includes unlimited beverages (together with a significant selection of spirits), a daily mini bar refill, bounteous meals, unlimited non-motorised water sports and several other perks. A handful of other offerings are chargeable, should you feel inclined, but their Lobi Plan will not fall short on most counts. What does, however, set the resort apart is its adults-only policy — making this ‘island of love’ a haven for honeymooners and couples of all sorts.

When every nook and corner of the place is picture-perfect (and entirely Instagram worthy), you won’t miss monument or mall visits. Instead, let languorous moonlight walks on the beach, snorkelling at dawn and sunset cruises soak up your hours. The weather may be unpredictable — the afternoons can be hot and the evenings occasionally wet — but this equatorial piece of paradise offers guaranteed rejuvenation, with a side serving of spectacular holiday photographs.
