Sol Banyan Goa review: Slow down in the sunshine state

Sea La Vie showcases the best of Tisya Stays’ vacation rental philosophy in gorgeous Goa

All seasoned visitors to India’s sunshine state know that Goa can be many things to many people. From feni capital of the world to toes-in-sand travel destination, this is a wondrous spot for foodies and free spirits alike. Our latest sojourn, however, was part work-part play, and necessitated a relatively long stay of a specific nature. Since Covid, we’ve strayed from big brand hotels to charming boutique properties. In the late Nineties, this meant Calangute’s Pousada Tauma, but now, the options are innumerable — with Shikha and Gagan Gambhir fast becoming our hosts of choice with their Tisya Stays offerings.

On this occasion, we gave villa living a miss, opting instead for a luxurious three-bedroom penthouse in North Goa’s Candolim area. A far more practical choice on a quasi-business trip, this spectacular home came equipped with a fully-functional kitchen, three large and well-appointed rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and a charming living area with an expansive view of green fields — dotted with rather vocal peacocks that made the occasional cameo appearance while flying from bush to tree.

Cleverly named Sea La Vie, the duplex penthouse also packs in a private plunge pool (supported by an accessible full-size swimming pool in the Sol Banyan Grande building complex) and a spacious terrace attached to the master bedroom on the top floor.

When the outside world calls, the Reis Magos Fort and Three Kings Chapel are just a short drive from Sea La Vie, but there’s so much more to explore right at your doorstep. Candolim Beach is a longish walk away and, if you have time to stop and smell those metaphorical roses, catch a sunset here, with a mouth-watering masaledar bhutta in hand.

Several passable multi-cuisine restaurants dot the stretch leading up to Candolim Beach (try Tomato’s or Fisherman’s Cove in this area), but if you are looking for something dazzling, drive to Vagator: where AD Singh’s Olive Bar & Kitchen does languorous luxury to perfection, while Thalassa and Antares are not-to-be-missed either. Another notable mention is Burger Factory in Nerul — this proved to be an absolute revelation; a verdant oasis that is as pleasing on the eye as it is on the palate.

Best of all though, is Cohiba — also close to Tisya Stays’ Sea La Vie, in Candolim itself. If you happen to be in Goa on a Wednesday, drop everything in favour of a night out at this restobar, to catch Lester Rodrigues and his incredible band A26 rocking it up into the wee hours. Sing along to Celebration by Kool & The Gang, Paul Simon’s Call Me Al or We Built This City by Starship. Nostalgia and Goa have never been better.
